Landscape

The overall intention behind the development of the SDL in landscape terms is to maintain the distinct identity of each village.

The Consortium is committed to protecting key landscape features such as the River Loddon, and to linking new development to the existing villages in a natural way. New development will provide a softer edge to the western side of Shinfield.

At Spencers Wood, by respecting the existing mature trees and hedgerows, the development will have an enclosed character; visibly separating it from the neighbouring villages. Similarly, the character of the east and south of Three Mile Cross will be retained by creating open space areas that buffer the new development and the agricultural fields beyond.

Between Spencers Wood and Shinfield there will be an area of green space, both west and east of Ryeish Green.

The ridge and northern slopes

The ridge and northern slopes will remain open, to retain separation between Reading and the villages south of the M4.

This open landscape will provide SANGs (Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace) north of the main villages.

The master plan is sensitive to the existing topography and does not encroach on the northern ridgeline.

The form of development and settlement layout is in keeping with natural contours; following their direction to fit with the grain of the landscape.

Loddon Valley

Our plans recognise that the flat valley floor floodplain is a sensitive landscape.

The floor, along with the river, copses and meadows will provide a large area of SANG to the south of Shinfield.

Settlement Identity

The new developments will be linked to each of the three villages and a distinct separation between the villages will be maintained.

Existing copses, hedgerows and trees of value will be included in plans to reflect local character. Shinfield, Spencers Wood, and Three Mile Cross will each keep their identity, distinct from one another, and from Reading to the north.

Ecology

The SDL forms a wide range of grassland and foraging habitats. Species such as barn owl and other breeding birds live here, as well as badgers and bats. Loss of habitat would be minimised and where necessary compensated by creation of new.

The inclusion of SANGs (Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace) will provide varied and semi-natural countryside walks and riverside views. Each SANG will be linked, providing a wildlife corridor.

The master plan will minimise loss of oaks and other valuable trees, as well as high-value hedgerows.

Recreation

An open space strategy is at the heart of the proposals. This has been developed for the whole of the SDL.

Informal and formal play areas are provided in each of the villages. Sports pitches are within the central belt of open space between Shinfield and Spencers Wood. Allotments will also be provided across the SDL, as will a cemetery.

The SANGs are connected via a central link, and offer a circular route through areas of open countryside.
